This is Slow Poke, a ‘possum.

He’s the one in the middle.

In July of 1970, Slow Poke won a “Prettiest Possum” contest at the Spivey’s Corner Hollerin’ Contest (in Harnett County, North Carolina) and was presented to then Governor Scott – who had a fondness for possum stew.

Pictured from left to right: Governor Bob Scott, Tom Ellis, “Miss Possum” Margaret Ann Wilkes (who also won a beauty contest), and Larry Barnes of the state Wildlife Commission.

There was a bit of  public outrage over the ten-pound beauty getting eaten, so the governor granted the marsupial a reprieve and had him released into the wild.

In what looks like a dogwood tree.

I have no reason for sharing this, other than the fact that I stumbled upon it while I was link-hopping and thought it was funny.
