See that thing sticking out of the ground that looks like a partially-buried barrel?


It is, in fact, a partially buried barrel from 1914-1915. Why would someone partially bury a barrel? To make a barrel privy. (Yes, like an outhouse.) I’m not an expert on outhouses, but I imagine the barrel’s bottom was removed and it was used to keep the hole from collapsing. There are only two pictures of this particular privy on Flickr, neither one showing and kind of structure, so it was either for fair-weather use or the enclosure was outside of frame.
